What exactly is Holistic Interior Design?

Definition of holistic

characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole

Several years ago, a shift began in the design industry. Green or sustainable design became a household concept and people began to establish an undeniable change in how we live within our built environment. Though it didn’t catch on super quick, as humans are rather ecocentric still, the concepts of “global warming”, “sustainable living” and “mindfulness” are not fading. In fact, we are transitioning to a time where we want to live in spaces that not only nurture a healthy earth, but support our functional and visual needs, a space that can also support our spiritual journey.

“The space we live in is not just a shelter for the body, but of the mind and spirit as well. “

The space we live in is not just a shelter for the body, but of the mind and spirit as well. Our home should not only demonstrate our visual aesthetic, but also be a place that nurtures the journey of who we are and what we embody spiritually. While traditional interior design tends to focus mainly on the aesthetic value of a space (which is important), holistic interior design is an alternative approach that emphasizes the interconnectedness of all three elements- physical, emotional, and spiritual. Finding harmony within all three manifests a home’s “whole” heartbeat leading to a more peaceful and rejuvenating environment.

For example, if you look around your room, I’m sure there is at least a small pile of clutter you never quite get to, but is always in the back of your mind. The clutter we keep visually in our space can end up transferring to a cluttering of the energy and even begin to impede on the mental and spiritual clarity of the people within the environment. My goal with a client is to eliminate these “energy blocks” and instead focus on transitioning our home as a sanctuary for our spiritual journey. It is a healing space for our mind and body as well as a place to create connection to ourselves and our family. The healing effect can be as simple as having a space in which to read and get your mind off of the day you've had; to create a space where one can take time for healing self care or a family can truly connect to one another without distractions.

By helping to set clear intentions and learn mindfulness within the home, choose sustainable materials, apply color therapy techniques, help manifest actual shifts of energy from placement of furnishings and decorative objects, using essential oils and crystal therapy and more, I help optimize the relationship between the built environment and the humans within. In order to achieve this, it is also important to consider various aspects of the client's personality, needs and challenges as they exist now as well.

The end goal for me, is to help create an interior that is in harmony emotionally, spiritually and physically with the individuals who live there. It is truly my pleasure to accompany a client successfully on this journey. The final result will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on their living environment where the client can experience life as it becomes more vibrant, more healing and more rejuvenated.
